Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park lies on shores of Lake Tanganyika in Kigoma Region, Tanzania. It is one of only protected areas for chimpanzees in the country. 

The chimpanzee population in Mahale Mountains National Park is largest known and due to its size and remoteness. It is the only place where chimpanzees and lion co-exist. Mahale Mountains National Park can be reached by flight then boat to the National park.

Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park is in western Kigoma Region, Tanzania 10 miles (20 km) north of Kigoma the capital of Kigoma Region. Gombe is one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania with only 13.5 square miles (35 km2) of protected land along the hills of the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Gombe Park is known worldwide for its population of chimpanzees, whose colony one is of the most studied in the world. In 1960, Jane Goodall moved to this remote part of Tanzania and began studying great apes. His work allows for many discoveries concerning chimpanzees, and the scientific impact of his discoveries is considerable. 

Today, the park is still home to a research centre that continuously tracks great apes’ populations. In addition to chimpanzees, baboons are very common in Gombe, as well as various species of colobus. More than 200 species around the national park.

When is the best time to visit Gombe Stream National Park?

Trekking Chimpanzees in Gombe can done throughout the year. During dry season the change of finding them it is easy, from July to October. In the Wet season it might take hours to find the chimps. November to April is the wet season. It might be difficult to find chimp moving around. The forest become slippery to walk on

Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park is located not far from Lake Tanganyika. The National park created in 1974 and is in the Katavi Region, Tanzania. It is a very remote park that is less frequently visited that other national parks in Tanzania. 

The park is approximately 4,471 square Kilometres (1,726 sq mi) in area. It is the third largest national parks in Tanzania, the park has large animal herds like Cape Buffaloes, Zebra, wildebeest, giraffes and elephants and in the Katuma River will find crocodiles and hippo. The number of visitors is extremely low even though the park is well known and remote.

When is the best time to visit Katavi National Park?

  • May to October – Animals are easier to be spot

  • November to April – Wet Season. During that period we call low season, you can get better accommodation rate, and it is hard to find animals because vegetations are everywhere.

Rubondo Island National Park

Rubondo Island is a Tanzania National Park located in the North-West of Tanzania in the Lake Victoria. Rubondo Island is about 150 Km (93 mi) west of Mwanza Region. The Rubondo Island National Park covering an area 456.8 km2. The Island has higher reputation of 400 species of birds that have been identified. You can find different animals in the area like Chimpanzee, revert monkey, Sitatunga, hippopotamus, genet, and bushbuck.
