The southern Circuit Safari have different National Parks and authentic culture. We have Mikumi National Park, the fourth largest park in Tanzania, adjoining with Nyerere National Park (former Selous Game Reserve) forming one huge ecosystem bordering the Udzungwa and Uluguru Mountains, all of them consider one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.  Nyerere National Park (former Selous) in Southern, before being National Park it was the oldest game reserve and largest in Africa. 

The Great Ruaha river is located is southcentral of Tanzania that flows through the Usangu wetlands and Ruaha National Parks enter Nyerere National Park and flows into The Rufiji River. Ruaha National Park is another Tanzania Park located in the Southern of Tanzania and it is the second largest National Park after Serengeti National Park. The Southern circuit safaris are remote and memorable, you will learn a lot about wildlife and culture in Tanzania. These areas offer the most beautifully safari of all our destination within Tanzania. Safari in the South can be done through game-drives, boat safari, walking safari, and hiking. 

Nyerere National Park (former Selous Game Reserve)

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is the largest National Park in Tanzania. The Rufiji River attack lots of wildlife in the Dry season from June through October, the Nyerere National Park does not only offer game driver, but also boat Safari and walking safari.  Rufiji River can be found Hippo, crocodile and around the river you will be enjoying good birdwatch during boat safari. Before dark many animals coming to drink water on the Rufiji River.

The Park offers very good wildlife viewing, group of Giraffe, Buffalo, waterbuck, impala, Zebra, lions, and Wild dog. Nyerere National Park is home to numerous uncommon antelope species like Sable and Puku. It seems black Rhino is rare but can be tracked down in some remote areas.

When is the best time to visit Nyerere National Park?

Best time for game-drive from early June to October, because is a dry season and easy to spot animals. October to May is wet season the area is green and beautiful

March, April and May less travellers / tourist – price is might be lowered and good peak bird watching since migratory birds are present. During this period, we also call “green” season or rain season, road become muddy and hard to travel around, wildlife viewing is not easy, and many lodges close from April to May.

Mikumi National Park

The Mikumi National Park near Morogoro, Tanzania was established in 1964. Often referred to as a “Serengeti in miniature”. It covers an area of 3,230 Kmis the fourth largest in the country.  The park is famous for its antelope populations, especially elands, big kudu, black hippo. More than 400 bird’s species can be found in the park during October and April.

You can also find lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, wildebeest, Zebras, jackal, African scythe and small populations of leopards and cheetahs. The park is located on the northern edge of the Selous game reserve with it extends to the North. The park is located 283 km from the economic capital of the country, between Morogoro and Iringa.

When is the best time to visit Mikumi Game Reserve?

Best time for game drive and wildlife viewing in Mikumi is not seasonal and is fine throughout the year, during June to October (the dry season). The park is dry, less vegetation and easy to spot animals gather around water sources.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park

The Udzungwa Mountains is a national park in south-central Tanzania with a size of 1,990 km2 (770 miles2). The habitats contained within the national park include tropical rainforest, mountain forest, miombo woodland, grassland and steppe. There are no predatory mammals that cause problem to the travels. 

The park biodiversity is known to be one of the highest in Africa after the Ituri forest. 2500 plants species have been identified, 160 of which have medicinal use. The forest covers almost all the park, and the large variations of altitude more than 2300 meters. More than 400 bird species, including 12 endemic I have been found in the park and 11 species of primates, 5 are endemic.

Udzungwa has to offer different activities:

  • Natural trails for hiking
  • A variety of bird species (about 250 species including endemic birds Rufous winged sunbird and Udzungwa forest partridge the rest include other native birds and both Afro tropical and Pale artic migrants
  • A Magnificent view of a natural Tropical Rainforest with 2500 different plant communities / species cultural, ecological, economical, historical education and medicinal values
  • Several waterfall with the famous Sanje waterfalls (170m) in the national park system in Tanzania.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is the largest national park in Tanzania with its 20,226 square kilometres (7,809 sq mi).The name of the park is derived from the Great Ruaha River, which flows along its south-eastern margin and is the focus for game-view.  The park is located in the southern highlands, if you drive straight from Dar es Salaam it will take 12 hours driving or more, by car on dirt road from Iringa and there are two airstrips. – Msembe airstrip at Msembe (park headquarters) and Jongomeru Airstrip. 

Ruaha is the second largest National park, after Serengeti National park. In Ruaha can be found different East African cheetah and Lion, African Leopard and wild dog, spotted hyena, giraffe, hippopotamus, Africa buffalo, and sable antelope. Ruaha National Parks has been nominated by National Geographic to be a best PLACE TO VISIT IN 2018.

When is the best time to visit Ruaha National Park?

  • June – February are the dry season, best time to see wildlife in Ruaha National Park. Animals are easier to spot due to less vegetation and most of animals concentrates around water sources.

  • May to October – Wildlife viewing is easier because vegetations are less and animals gather around rivers.

  • April – May road could be impenetrable; wildlife viewing is not good compare to the dry season. Some lodges and camp closed
